Why Mum & Baby Yoga?

Our Teacher Anna explains...

Having a baby is a wonderful part of a woman’s life, but it is also a time of many changes that require acceptance and adaptation.

Yoga has energetic benefits during motherhood at all different levels which is linked to the question “What is Yoga?” Yoga being the union of body, breath and mind is for me the key reason its benefits differ when compared to other prenatal/postnatal exercises. Yoga practices aim to give tools to learn to balance the different elements and layers of our bodies so that we can experience the present moment without worrying too much about the future or dwelling on the past.  Using a combination of physical postures, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditations, yoga can train the mind of a mother to slow down the circling around a thought and the building up of stories that might cause anxieties, worries, stress and negative feelings. The aim is to give tools which work not just during the practice itself, but in every moment of the everyday life.

Yoga can give empowerment and self-confidence in motherhood when so much is new and unknown and the body goes through so many changes; when each stage brings new experiences and energy levels go up and down, where there is an increase of worry and anxiety about the future, when resting is sometimes hard, and when not knowing whether something is good or bad/right or wrong, can be overwhelming . Yoga can give a mother tools to focus less on the unknown and more on the beauty and miracle of having been able to host a little human being in her womb and to give birth to him/her.

Mum and baby yoga offers a great opportunity to share some special time with your baby as well as with other mums and their little ones. Attending class regularly can enable you to bond with other mums who my be experiencing similar things, it may lead to feeling more supported and less isolated in the early days of motherhood.

Together we take the first steps towards strengthening your core and pelvic floor and maintaining a balanced and healthy body, re-energise and re-balance your emotions, and generally nurture your self-confidence. Breathing practices taught in the class aim to give you a tool to use at home in helping calming and soothing your babies, or just to cultivate a little time for yourself.
