The warmer months are a great time to make the most of charity running events, and of course running can be amazing for your health and well-being. Some of the benefits include improving your mental health and making you feel happier – the “runners high” from the rush of feel-good hormones is just a part of it, evidence has eluded that physical activity is an effective alternative to treating depression and decreasing stress. Running is also good for your heart and strengthens bones and tendons.
The great part of running for charity is training is completely free and all you need is a path, park or road and a pair of trainers. The cost of signing up for a charity run varies but most are between £10-£20, and the feeling of satisfaction afterwards will make it feel completely worth it. If you’ve missed the sign up window for any events you’re interested in, you can always go along for support, which can be a great free day out with the family. Here are our running event highlights for the next couple of months:
1. The Victoria Park 5k and 10k Run for the British Heart Foundation, August 2nd 2015.
The sign up cost is just £13 for adults and free for under 12s, and it’s in great a central location in East London.
2. The London Triathlon, August 8th and 9th 2015.
Not strictly a running event, but this summer’s AJ Bell London Triathlon is the world’s largest triathlon and caters for all levels of triathlete.
3. Richmond Half Marathon, September 6th 2015.
The only race that takes place in the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. Public entry is now closed but there are charities with available places if you wish to run.
4. Great North Run, September 13th 2015.
The event is broadcasted on the BBC and usually attracts world famous athletes such as Mo Farrah and Paula Radcliffe.
5. Bournemouth Half Marathon, October 4th 2015.
This coastal run offers a beautiful setting; there are various entry options and prices.
