Our gut is responsible for digestion, immunity and our body's serotonin levels (the feel good hormone) - so shouldn't we all be taking better care of it?

Yes in a nutshell! Massage therapist Josey Crane offers us some advice on how to better look after our tummies...

What's in our stomach?

Believe it or not our gut is an amazing powerhouse; responsible not only for digestion but our sense of well-being too. Up to 95% of our body's serotonin (which affects how we feel day to day and influences our sense of happiness) can be found here, and 70-80% of our immune cells are in our gut too which mean we have a lot to thank our intestines for! They have more nerve cells than the spinal cord - over 100 million, and the same cells in our gut originated from the same tissue as the brain during foetal development.

It’s little wonder that scientists now refer to the gut as our "second brain". Professor Emeran Mayer (Professor of physiology, psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California) has even stated that;

"a big part of our emotions are probably influenced by the nerves in our gut".

So shouldn't we be taking better care of this vital area? Alongside good nutrition and regular exercise Abdominal Massage is one of the ways we can take better care of both our gut and our emotional health. Abdominal Massage has its roots in an age old tradition dating back to those clever Mayans some thousands of years ago.

How does the treatment work?

Abdominal Massage gently restores the body back to its natural balance by bringing the organs within the abdominal area back into alignment - releasing fascial and muscular restrictions, strengthening tendons and ligaments and boosting blood, nerve and lymph flow. It's been known to help with many common ailments such as lower back pain, digestive problems, bloating, constipation, stress, anxiety and depression.

So why not give your tummy some much deserved love this autumn and start the new season with renewed vigour and a greater sense of health and wellness.

20 min Abdominal Massage taster sessions are available with Josey Crane on Wednesday 26th October (10-1pm), Wednesday 2nd of November, and Saturday 12th of November for only £10.
